Asha Bhosle Cremated with Full State Honours in Mumbai, Nation Pays Emotional Tribute

Mumbai: Mumbai witnessed a wave of emotion on Monday as the nation bid a final goodbye to legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who was cremated with full state honours.

Her final journey began from her residence in Lower Parel, with the hearse moving towards Shivaji Park crematorium. Decorated with white and yellow flowers, the vehicle carried a large portrait of the iconic singer adorned in a traditional Maharashtrian ‘nath’. Thousands of grieving fans gathered along the route, paying their last respects as the cortege passed.

Final rites at Shivaji Park

The last rites were performed at 4 pm in the presence of close family members, including her son Anand Bhosle and siblings Usha Mangeshkar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

Singer Anup Jalota and Shaan offered musical tributes, while actor Aamir Khan was among those who attended the cremation.

State honours and ceremonial salute

In a mark of national respect, Asha Bhosle was accorded full state honours. Her mortal remains, brought from Breach Candy Hospital, were placed in a glass casket draped in the Indian tricolour. A ceremonial police salute was given, symbolising the nation’s tribute to one of its most celebrated musical icons.

Earlier in the day, admirers and fans were allowed a final public viewing at her residence.

Celebrities gather to honour a legend

Several prominent personalities from film, music, and sports attended the funeral. Among them were cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and Anjali Tendulkar.

Music maestro AR Rahman, along with actors Jackie Shroff, Riteish Deshmukh, Renuka Shahane, Ranveer Singh, and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, were present. Veteran stars Helen, Poonam Dhillon, and Meenakshi Sheshadri also paid their respects.

A timeless musical legacy

Born to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle began her musical journey at a young age, making her debut in 1943.

Over a career spanning more than eight decades, she delivered countless timeless hits across genres. Her collaborations with RD Burman remain iconic in Indian music history.

From classics like Piya Tu Ab To Aaja and Dum Maro Dum to Dil Cheez Kya Hai and Chura Liya Hai Tumne, her voice defined generations of music lovers.

A recipient of two National Film Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2000), and the Padma Vibhushan (2008), Asha Bhosle leaves behind an unparalleled legacy that will continue to resonate for generations.
