Dakshin Dinajpur Leads, Kalimpong Lags
- Dakshin Dinajpur reported the highest turnout at around 96%, emerging as the top-performing district.
- Kalimpong recorded the lowest turnout, though officials reported no major disruptions.
Higher Than 2021 Elections
The current turnout significantly surpasses the 82.3% recorded in the 2021 Assembly elections, indicating a clear surge in voter participation and engagement.
SIR Exercise Draws Political Focus
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls conducted ahead of polling had triggered political debate, with opposition parties raising concerns over exclusions. However, the high turnout suggests that a large section of voters successfully exercised their franchise.
Sporadic Tensions Reported
While polling remained largely peaceful, isolated incidents of clashes and allegations of irregularities were reported from a few pockets, prompting tight security deployment.
Tamil Nadu Records Robust Polling Above 84%
Tamil Nadu, which voted in a single phase across all 234 constituencies, also witnessed strong participation with over 84% turnout.
Polling progressed steadily despite heat and humidity, with voters turning up in large numbers from early morning hours. Most regions reported peaceful and orderly voting, with only minor complaints regarding polling arrangements.
Election Commission Calls It ‘Historic’
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar described the turnout as unprecedented:
“Highest-ever percentage of polling in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu since Independence — the Election Commission of India salutes each voter.”
Officials noted that the figures released so far are provisional, and final turnout data will be confirmed after consolidation from all polling stations.
