
New Delhi: Ashok Kumar Panda on Friday assumed charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).
Prior to his appointment, Dr Panda was serving as Director (Finance) of the company and also held the additional charge of Director (Commercial) for nearly nine months.
An electrical engineering graduate, Dr Panda joined SAIL in 1992 as a Management Trainee (Technical). Over more than three decades, he held key responsibilities across various plants and units, gaining extensive experience in operational, financial and commercial management.

During his tenure as Director (Finance), he led several strategic initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency, profitability, production enhancement and policy reforms in sales, marketing, finance and human resources.
As Director (Commercial), he focused on increasing sales volumes, improving net sales realisation, reducing inventory levels and strengthening product branding.
After assuming charge as CMD, Dr Panda said SAIL is moving towards the next phase of expansion to increase its production capacity to 35 million tonnes per annum. He stressed that workplace safety, raw material security, expansion of mining operations and focus on value-added products would remain among the company’s top priorities.
