Mothers – The Architects of Character and Courage

Mother’s Day is not only a tribute to mothers but also to grandmothers, stepmothers, and all mother figures who nurture and guide us with affection and sacrifice. The modern celebration of Mother’s Day originated in the United States in 1908, when Anna Jarvis organised a memorial for her mother at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Her mother, Ann Jarvis, had devoted her life to caring for wounded soldiers during the American Civil War and worked tirelessly on public health issues.

Mother’s Day is a special occasion dedicated to honouring mothers and celebrating motherhood. It is observed every year on the second Sunday of May. The day celebrates the unconditional love between a mother and her child and recognises the invaluable role mothers play in shaping our lives.

The love of a mother is unconditional and selfless. It does not depend upon a child’s appearance, ability, or achievements. It is rightly said, “Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws.” A mother represents Shakti — the divine feminine power that symbolises love, harmony, nurturing, and universal well-being.

Though times have changed and the roles of mothers have evolved, the essence of motherhood remains eternal. Mothers protect and nurture their children like birds sheltering their young beneath their wings. In every family, the mother becomes the absorber of conflicts and emotions, ensuring peace and unity at home.

The responsibilities of a mother never end. She is the finest example of dedication, time management, crisis handling, and organisational skill. From early morning till late at night, she works tirelessly without expecting anything in return. Her duties have no fixed hours, and yet she performs them with endless patience and affection.

Our mothers are our first teachers, friends, guides, doctors, and confidantes. They always place our needs before their own and stand beside us through every joy and hardship. We must reflect upon the sacrifices they have made for our upbringing and the countless struggles they have silently endured so that we may live better lives.

Mother’s Day gives us an opportunity to express the gratitude and emotions that often remain unspoken due to busy schedules, misunderstandings, or hesitation. Mothers are frequently taken for granted, and only in their absence do we realise how deeply their presence sustains the family.

A mother shapes not only the character of her child but also the direction of an entire life. No institution or formal education can impart the moral values, compassion, and emotional strength that a mother instils in her children. This becomes even more evident in the lives of mothers raising children with special needs, whose resilience and devotion are beyond measure.

Young people must understand these virtues to make Mother’s Day truly meaningful. Merely offering gifts or greetings is not enough. The real tribute to mothers lies in respecting, caring for, and valuing them every day of our lives.

Every day should be a celebration of the Divine Feminine power embodied by mothers — the true architects of character, courage, and humanity.
