News Desk: In one of the biggest recent crackdowns on organised crime targeting the South Asian community, Canadian authorities have arrested 17 individuals of Indian origin for their alleged role in a violent extortion and shooting network operating across Ontario and beyond.
The arrests were announced by Ontario’s Peel Regional Police, which said the accused are suspected to be linked to an international gang identified as “For Brothers.” Investigators allege the network was behind a series of coordinated criminal operations involving intimidation, gun violence, arson attacks, and extortion threats aimed primarily at Indo-Canadian businessmen.
Most of the accused are based in Brampton — a city known for its large Punjabi-origin population — while several are believed to have roots in India’s Punjab. Police officials stated that the gang allegedly preyed on members of the South Asian community, particularly entrepreneurs running trucking firms, restaurants, and other local businesses.

According to investigators, the accused were tied to at least 24 separate criminal episodes, many of which involved violent attacks. Authorities said the probe uncovered a disturbing pattern in which businesses refusing extortion demands were repeatedly targeted through shootings and firebombing attempts.
Police disclosed that 16 of the incidents were directly associated with the “For Brothers” network and involved large-scale gun violence, with more than 300 bullets allegedly fired across different attacks.
The sweeping investigation resulted in a total of 106 criminal charges against the accused. Law enforcement agencies also confirmed that six suspects could eventually face deportation proceedings, although any immigration action would only proceed after the completion of court cases in Canada.
Officials described the operation as a major breakthrough against organised extortion rackets that have increasingly spread fear among South Asian communities in recent years. Cases involving threats, targeted shootings, and intimidation of Indo-Canadian businessmen have seen a sharp rise, particularly in areas with significant Punjabi populations.
The development has once again drawn attention to the growing challenge of transnational gang networks operating within Canada through local criminal cells and cross-border connections.
Authorities believe the crackdown may help dismantle a wider ecosystem of organised crime that has been using fear and violence to establish influence within immigrant business communities.
