8 Workers Killed as Molten Steel Spills at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant

Visakhapatnam: In one of the deadliest industrial accidents in recent years, at least eight workers were killed and six others seriously injured after molten steel spilled at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) operated by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) on Monday.

The accident occurred at the plant’s Steel Melting Shop (SMS) when a ladle carrying molten steel reportedly malfunctioned during handling, causing a large quantity of metal heated to nearly 1,600 degrees Celsius to spill onto workers in the vicinity.

The intense heat triggered a major fire and panic inside the facility as workers rushed to safety. Firefighters, plant safety personnel, and rescue teams launched emergency operations, while the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Officials said the mishap took place in the Steel Melting Shop and Continuous Casting section of the plant. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident, while employee unions have demanded a thorough probe into safety protocols and equipment maintenance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the deceased, while wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.
