New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has emerged as India’s highest-ranked institution in the prestigious QS World University Rankings 2027, securing the 118th position globally and improving five places from last year’s rank of 123. The achievement reinforces IIT Delhi’s growing international reputation and marks another milestone for Indian higher education.
According to the latest rankings released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds on Thursday, IIT Delhi retained its position as the country’s top-ranked institution and matched the highest-ever QS global ranking achieved by an Indian university. The institute’s rise has been driven by improvements in employer reputation, research impact, academic performance, and global visibility.
India’s strong showing continued with 52 Indian institutions featuring in the global rankings. Following IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay ranked 134th globally, while IIT Madras secured the 170th position. Other leading Indian institutions included IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur, highlighting the growing global presence of India’s premier engineering and research institutes.
On the global stage, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained the No. 1 position for yet another year, extending its dominance in international higher education rankings. Imperial College London and Stanford University shared the second spot, followed by the University of Oxford at fourth and Harvard University at fifth.

The QS World University Rankings evaluate universities using indicators such as academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, research influence, internationalization, graduate employability, and sustainability. The 2027 edition assessed more than 1,500 institutions worldwide.
Education experts say IIT Delhi’s continued rise reflects India’s expanding research ecosystem, stronger industry-academia partnerships, and increasing global recognition of Indian talent. While no Indian institution has yet entered the global top 100, the latest rankings indicate steady progress and growing competitiveness on the world stage.
