Cancer Detection Gets Smarter: Reliance Firm Patents AI Blood Test for Early Diagnosis

Bengaluru: In a significant advancement for cancer diagnostics, Strand Life Sciences, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL), has secured an Indian patent for an innovative blood-based technology that can detect cancer at an early stage and identify the likely tissue or organ where it originated using a single blood sample.

The patented platform analyses cell-free DNA (cfDNA) present in the bloodstream and combines genome sequencing, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven machine learning to detect cancer-specific genetic and epigenetic changes. The technology is designed to identify subtle alterations in DNA patterns associated with cancer, enabling diagnosis before the disease progresses to advanced stages.

According to the company, the innovation addresses one of the biggest challenges in oncology—late diagnosis. A large proportion of cancer patients in India and globally are diagnosed only after symptoms appear, when treatment becomes more difficult and survival rates decline. Early detection significantly improves the chances of successful treatment and better patient outcomes.

The AI-enabled platform can also predict the likely tissue of origin of the cancer, providing clinicians with valuable insights for faster and more targeted diagnosis. This capability has the potential to reduce the need for multiple invasive tests and accelerate treatment decisions.

Commenting on the development, Ramesh Hariharan, CEO of Strand Life Sciences, said the patent represents a major milestone in the company’s efforts to develop next-generation AI-powered liquid biopsy technologies. He said the goal is to make cancer screening more accurate, scalable, and accessible while supporting precision medicine through advanced genomics.

Liquid biopsy is emerging as one of the most promising technologies in cancer care because it requires only a blood sample, making it far less invasive than conventional tissue biopsies. By integrating AI with genome sequencing and biological data analysis, the new platform aims to improve the sensitivity and accuracy of detecting multiple types of cancer at an early stage.

The patent further strengthens Strand Life Sciences’ position in the field of molecular diagnostics and precision oncology. The Bengaluru-based genomics company has been expanding its portfolio of AI-enabled diagnostic solutions as part of Reliance Industries’ broader focus on healthcare innovation and digital health technologies.

Healthcare experts believe that affordable, AI-driven blood tests capable of detecting cancer early could transform cancer screening programmes in India, where a significant number of patients are still diagnosed in advanced stages of the disease. Earlier diagnosis not only improves survival rates but also helps reduce the overall cost and complexity of treatment.
