Guwahati: The flood situation in eastern Assam remains grim, with the death toll rising to 62 as of Friday, while hundreds of villages remain submerged. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to review the rescue and relief operations underway in the 12 flood-affected districts.
Expressing deep condolences over the loss of lives and property, the Prime Minister assured the people of Assam of all possible assistance from the Centre for relief, rehabilitation, and rebuilding efforts, Chief Minister Sarma said.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than seven lakh people have been affected by the latest wave of floods. Sivasagar district is the worst-hit, with nearly 3.48 lakh people affected, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat. Other flood-affected districts include Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Hojai, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Kamrup, and several others. Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke with Sarma to assess the flood situation.

Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army, Air Force, along with local administration officials and volunteers, continue round-the-clock rescue and relief operations. Chief Minister Sarma has directed State ministers Bimal Bora, Sushanta Borgohain, Pijush Hazarika, Keshab Mahanta, and Ajanta Neog to supervise relief efforts in the affected areas.
Despite the ongoing operations, thousands of affected families continue to face shortages of essential relief materials, including safe drinking water and healthcare services. Widespread damage has also been reported to embankments, roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya chaired a high-level review meeting with office-bearers of the Assam unit of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) at Lok Bhavan to assess the ongoing humanitarian response. Stressing the need for a robust and proactive approach, the Governor urged all stakeholders to further strengthen emergency response mechanisms and emphasized preventive measures to curb the possible outbreak of water-borne and vector-borne diseases in the aftermath of the floods.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal also expressed deep concern over the worsening flood situation in eastern Assam and assured the State government of all possible support from the Centre. He said the flood situation was discussed in detail during the recent Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding that the Centre and the Assam government were working in close coordination to manage the crisis.
Sonowal, a former Chief Minister of Assam, said the floods have caused extensive damage to agricultural land, livestock, commercial establishments, and public infrastructure across the affected districts.
