Bokaro: Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a flagship unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has scripted one of the strongest quarters in its history by delivering an exceptional all-round performance in the first quarter (Q1) of FY 2026-27. The plant not only posted record financial results but also achieved historic milestones in production, operational efficiency, energy conservation and techno-economic performance, reinforcing its position as one of SAIL’s best-performing steel plants.
Financial Performance Hits Historic High
BSL’s robust operational planning, disciplined cost management and production excellence translated into an impressive financial turnaround during the April-June quarter.
Operational revenue climbed 9.37% to ₹5,880 crore, up from ₹5,376 crore in the corresponding period.
The biggest highlight was the plant’s EBITDA, which nearly doubled from ₹588 crore to ₹1,154 crore, making it the highest among all SAIL integrated steel plants. The EBITDA margin also surged sharply from 10.94% to 19.62%, the best within SAIL, reflecting stronger operational efficiency and better resource utilisation.
Profit Before Tax (PBT) witnessed a dramatic jump, soaring from ₹97.82 crore to ₹715.57 crore, underlining the plant’s remarkable operational and financial resilience.
Record-Breaking Production Across Key Units
BSL registered its best-ever first-quarter production since inception, setting new records in several critical areas, including:
- Oven Pushings
- Gross Sinter
- Hot Metal
- Crude Steel
- Total Saleable Cold Rolled Steel (CR Saleable)
The plant also recorded its highest-ever first-quarter performance in key operating parameters such as Sinter Machine Productivity, Blast Furnace Productivity and Coke Rate, reflecting improved process efficiency across major production units.
New Benchmarks in Energy Efficiency
The quarter marked significant progress in techno-economic performance.
Coal Dust Injection (CDI) improved to 96 kg per tonne of Hot Metal (THM), surpassing the previous benchmark of 95 kg/THM. The improvement is expected to reduce coke consumption while enhancing blast furnace efficiency and lowering production costs.
BSL also established a new quarterly benchmark in Specific Energy Consumption, reducing it to 6.314 GCal per tonne of Crude Steel, improving on the earlier best of 6.328 GCal/TCS—another indicator of enhanced operational efficiency and sustainable manufacturing.
Several Monthly Records Fall
The April-June quarter witnessed a series of new monthly milestones across departments.
In April, the Raw Material Handling Plant (RMHP) unloaded a record 11.7 lakh tonnes of raw material through 16,653 wagons, surpassing the previous best of 10.7 lakh tonnes.
The Coke Ovens Department achieved a record average of 531 oven pushings per day in June.
Despite the shutdown of Route-2, the Cold Rolling Mill produced 52,009 tonnes of Saleable Cold Rolled Steel in April, setting a fresh monthly record.
The plant also registered its best monthly Specific Energy Consumption of 6.274 GCal/TCS in June, further strengthening its energy conservation efforts.
Water Conservation Cuts Costs
BSL continued to intensify its water conservation initiatives during the quarter through better process water utilisation and resource management.
The measures significantly reduced specific water consumption, leading to lower water charges while strengthening the plant’s sustainability initiatives.
Fresh Daily Production Records
The plant also rewrote its daily production records.
On May 17, 2026, BSL achieved its highest-ever Gross Sinter production of 22,516 tonnes, surpassing the previous record set just weeks earlier.
Under four-blast furnace operation, the plant produced a record 18,206 tonnes of Hot Metal on April 22, 2026, establishing another historic benchmark.
Coal Chemical Sales Reach New Peak
BSL recorded its highest-ever monthly Coal Chemical sales in June, generating ₹38.92 crore, exceeding the previous record of ₹35.97 crore set in September 2024.
The achievement came while maintaining the lowest secondary steel inventory, highlighting improved inventory management and stronger market performance.
Recognising the contribution of its workforce, the plant also distributed gift cards to contract workers during the quarter.
Safety Remains Top Priority
Alongside operational excellence, BSL continued to strengthen its workplace safety culture under SAIL’s “Safety First & Always” philosophy.
The plant strictly enforced SAIL’s Zero Tolerance Rules through continuous safety awareness campaigns, leadership engagement, behavioural interventions and regular capability-building programmes, reinforcing its commitment towards achieving a Zero Harm workplace.
Poised for Another Strong Year
With record-breaking financial performance, historic production milestones and sustained improvements in operational efficiency, Bokaro Steel Plant has laid a strong foundation for FY 2026-27. The stellar first-quarter performance positions the plant to play a pivotal role in driving SAIL’s growth while maintaining its momentum in profitability, productivity and sustainable steelmaking.
