Fake PMO Official, Armed ‘Bodyguard’ Enter High-Security Area Ahead of PM Modi Event

Mumbai: A major security scare unfolded in Mumbai on Tuesday after two men were detained near the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled appearance at the Global Fintech Fest 2026.

According to Mumbai Police, one of the detained men, identified as 24-year-old Rohan Parekh, was allegedly carrying a forged identity card claiming to be from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Police also recovered a gun from the man accompanying him, who was allegedly posing as his bodyguard.

The two men reportedly attracted the attention of security personnel after Parekh was noticed moving suspiciously in the high-security area near the event venue. His credentials were checked, following which the alleged PMO identity card was found to be fake and both men were detained.

The incident has raised serious security concerns given its proximity to the venue where Prime Minister Modi was scheduled to attend the Global Fintech Fest 2026. The official GFF website confirms that the inaugural session on September 8 is restricted to specially invited guests, with the event being held at the Jio World Centre in BKC from September 8 to 11.

The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation. Investigators are questioning both men and examining their mobile phones, identity documents and other belongings to establish why they entered the area with a forged PMO credential and a firearm. Police are also probing whether their movements had any connection with the Prime Minister’s scheduled visit.

Further legal action will follow after the allegations and circumstances surrounding the incident are verified, police said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest 2026 at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai. The four-day fintech conference brings together policymakers, regulators, financial institutions, technology companies, startups and investors from across the world.
