Pakistan’s Ex Prez Asif Ali Zardari arrested by anti corruption dept

RNS: Pakistan’s former president and co-chairman of the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari, has been arrested by anti-corruption officers from his residence in Islamabad in a money-laundering and fake accounts case.
The arrest came hours after a two-member bench of the Islamabad high court rejected the pre-arrest bail pleas of Zardari and his sister, Faryal Talpur, in a case related to fake bank accounts and transactions — worth hundreds of millions of Pakistani rupees — with private companies allegedly owned by the two leaders.
A number of PPP workers and the children of the former president, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Asefa Bhutto Zardari, saw him off as he was driven away by officials of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to their lock-up in Islamabad’s Melody area where he was to undergo a medical check-up. The NAB will present the medical check-up report, as well as Zardari, in court on Tuesday to seek his custody. Both Zardari and Talpur can appeal, the high court order in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
The NAB had issued a warrant for Zardari on Sunday. No warrant has been issued for Talpur as yet.
“The NAB chairman overrode judicial orders and issued a non-bailable warrant for Asif Ali Zardari. We already had bail so how can the NAB warrant override the court’s orders,” said Latif Khosa, Zardari’s counsel.
