UN declares Pakistani Abdul Rehman Makki a global terrorist

RNS: United Nations Security Council (UNSC) listed Pakistan-based terrorist Abdul Rehman Makki as a global terrorist under its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee on Monday.

Makki is the brother-in-law of Hafiz Saeed, who is the leader of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the mastermind of the 26/11 attacks. Within the LeT, which the United States government classifies as a foreign terrorist organisation, he has held a number of different leadership responsibilities (FTO). In addition to that, he has been instrumental in the process of fund-raising for LeT operations.

This comes after China vetoed India’s proposal from the previous year to designate the leader of Lashkar-e-Taiba as a global terrorist organisation. In June of 2022, India lashed out at China for preventing a move to add the terrorist Abdul Rehman Makki to the Sanctions Committee’s watch list. This committee is also known as the United Nations Security Council 1267 Committee.

“On 16 January 2023, the Security Council Committee, pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida, and associated individuals, groups, undertakings and entities approved the addition of the entry specified below to its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2610 (2021) and adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations,” the UN said in a statement.

UN said in a statement, “On 16 January 2023, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida, and associated individuals, groups, undertakings and entities approved the addition of the entry specified below to its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2610 (2021) and adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.”

Makki has already been listed a terrorist by India and the United States. He has raised funds, recruited and radicalised youth to violence, and planned attacks in India, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir.
