RNS: A 21-day Winter School on Geospatial Science & Technology concluded at IIT-ISM Dhanbad on Thursday. Experts of Geospatial Technology congregated at IIT-ISM for the 21 day Winter School in Geospatial Technology to underline the significance of GIS, GPS and remote sensing in the contemporary era.
Altogether, 25 GIS Analysts, Geospatial Scientists besides Experts of Mining, Civil, Applied Geology and Applied Geophysics Engineering from across the country congregated at IIT (ISM) who delved deep into a wide range of issues in over 46 sessions of 21-day Winter School in Geospatial Science and Technology (Level 1) at IIT (ISM) from February 10 to March 2 today underscored the increasing significance of Geospatial Science & Technology in the present era for acquiring data referenced to earth which is used for analysis, modelling, simulations and visualization. They also agreed to the fact that Geospatial Technology helps in predicting future and also providing better ways to plan, design and make decisions, informed Rajni Singh, Dean, Media & Branding of ISM.
The occasion was the valedictory session of the three-week training session cum technical conclave jointly organized by the Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Mining Engineering of IIT (ISM) at Executive Development Centre of IIT (ISM) during which Dr Debpriya Dutta, Associate Head, Scientist G, DST-NGP, Government of India delivered the address as chief guest.
Professor Rajiv Shekhar, Director IIT (ISM), who presided over the valedictory function, termed the technical sessions of the winter school as a worthwhile exercise. Underlining the importance of Geomatics, he further said that without Geomatics, mining would not be possible.
He also gave details of different projects taken by Technology Innovation hub of IIT (ISM) TEXMiN, including the Mahandi Coalfields Limited project of finding out solution of traffic jam in Open Cast Mines there.
Professor Dhiraj Kumar, Deputy Director, IIT (ISM), who was also present during the function, highlighted the significance of Geospatial Technology in various domains like Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics, Mining Engineering and Environmental Science Engineering etc for Data collection and analysis.
He further said that IIT (ISM) will launch an Executive M Tech Programme in Geomatics where the Professoressionals can also earn knowledge through online mode.
The 21-day winter school organized as part of an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology aimed at encouraging and nurturing innovation among the youth through Geo Innovation Challenge witnessed the sessions of eminent experts like Professor Nagesh Kumar of IISC Bangalore on Geospatial Techniques for water resources assessment of a river basin; opportunities in Geospatial and Remote Sensing Technologies.
Professor Bishwajit Pradhan, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia, during his session on the 15th day of the winter school on February 24, spoke about Geospatial Intelligence in Natural Hazard Modelling while Professor PK Singh of IIT (ISM) spoke about Applications of Remote Sensing and GIS in Environmental Management.
Besides the 36 technical sessions of experts held from Day 1 of winter school from February 10 to Day 16 on February 25, altogether, 10 practical sessions including feedback sessions of the participants and projects seen were also carried out by participants, which were evaluated by the experts in separate sessions.
The two principal investigators of the winter school, Professor Srinivas Pasupuleti and Professor V Govind Kumar Villuri, about the expert sessions held during the three week winter school.
