RNS: At least 31 people were killed on Saturday as US President Donald Trump authorized military strikes against Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels in retaliation for their attacks on Red Sea shipping.
Trump issued a stern warning, telling the Houthis, “hell will rain down upon you” unless they cease their campaign.
In his statement, President Trump declared that the Houthis’ “time is up” and demanded that Iran immediately stop supporting the group. The US Central Command confirmed the strikes, sharing images of fighter jets launching from an aircraft carrier and a bomb hitting a compound in Yemen.
The US military said the operations, initiated on March 15, were precision strikes targeting Houthi positions to protect American interests, deter adversaries, and ensure the freedom of navigation in the region. Trump also took to Truth Social to announce the operation and once again urged Iran to sever its ties with the Houthis.
