New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep concern over the recent earthquake that struck Myanmar and caused significant damage in neighboring Thailand. Offering India’s support, he assured both nations of assistance and urged relevant authorities to be on high alert.

In a post on social media platform X, Modi stated, “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake, which hit Myanmar on Friday, sent powerful tremors across the region, with Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, feeling the impact. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake’s epicenter was located in Myanmar’s Sagaing region, at a depth of 10 km. Tremors were also reported in parts of China.

The Indian Embassy in Thailand has been actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with Thai authorities. As of now, no incidents involving Indian citizens have been reported. The embassy urged Indian nationals in Thailand to reach out to the emergency number (+66 618819218) for any urgent needs. It also confirmed that all members of the Indian Embassy in Bangkok and the Consulate in Chiang Mai are safe.

In Myanmar, the government has declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Naypyitaw and Mandalay, after widespread damage to buildings, roads, and infrastructure. Media reports suggest that a high-rise under construction collapsed in Thailand, with 90 people missing and at least 3 confirmed dead. In Myanmar, the iconic Ava Bridge in Mandalay collapsed into the Irrawaddy River, and several other buildings were destroyed by the powerful tremors.

The earthquake’s impact was felt strongly in Thailand, where people in Bangkok fled their homes as high-rise buildings swayed, and water sloshed out of pools. Rescue teams are working tirelessly in Myanmar to locate survivors and assist those affected.

The earthquake also disrupted preparations in Bangkok, which is set to host next week’s BIMSTEC regional summit. Prime Minister Modi and other leaders are scheduled to attend the event.
