New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has confirmed that 98.21% of ₹2000 denomination banknotes have been returned to the banking system.

This follows the RBI’s decision on 19 May, 2023, to withdraw the Rs 2000 notes from circulation.

At the time of the announcement, the total value of Rs 2000 notes in circulation was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. However, as of 31 March 2024, this figure had reduced to Rs 6,366 crore.

The RBI noted that the facility for depositing or exchanging Rs 2000 notes remained available at all bank branches until 7 October 2023. However, this facility is still available at the 19 issue offices of the RBI.

Additionally, individuals can send Rs 2000 notes through India Post from any post office to RBI offices for crediting to their bank accounts.

The Rs 2000 banknotes retain their status as legal tender.
