‘Bizarre & Barbaric’ WB Governor Slams Murshidabad Violence, Calls for Urgent Action

Kolkata: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has strongly condemned the recent violence in Murshidabad, describing the situation as “bizarre” and “barbaric” after visiting the affected areas over the weekend. His remarks follow the lynching of a father-son duo amid communal unrest triggered by protests against the Waqf law.

Bose, speaking to media on his return to Kolkata, said he would submit a detailed report to both the Centre and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, expressing alarm over what he termed as “ugly instincts of degeneration” in society.

“Violence was once limited to elections. Now, it’s becoming frequent and systemic. People are losing faith in the system,” he said, indirectly criticising the Trinamool Congress-led state government.

During his two-day tour of hotspots including Samsherganj, Dhulian, Suti, and Jangipur, the Governor interacted with victims and locals, many of whom demanded a permanent BSF camp to restore a sense of security.

Several Hindu homes were reportedly attacked during the unrest, with displaced families now taking shelter in relief camps in Malda. Bose said the situation has since stabilised, crediting the deployment of central armed forces.

Calling for urgent action, the Governor emphasized the shared responsibility of both state and central governments in ensuring civilian safety and preventing further escalation.
