News Desk: The United Nations Security Council has strongly denounced the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed the lives of at least 26 tourists and left many more injured, urging swift justice and global cooperation to hold those responsible accountable.
In a press statement released on Friday, the Council extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and to the governments of India and Nepal. The attack, which occurred on Tuesday in the scenic Pahalgam region, saw armed assailants open fire on tourists in a brutal act of violence.
Calling the attack “criminal and unjustifiable,” Security Council members emphasized that terrorism in all its forms poses one of the gravest threats to global peace and security. They stressed the urgent need to identify, prosecute, and punish the perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of such acts.
“The Council urges all countries to fully cooperate with relevant authorities in accordance with international law and existing Security Council resolutions,” the statement read, reaffirming member states’ commitment to combating terrorism through all lawful means under the UN Charter.
The United Nations also voiced ongoing concern over tensions in the region. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, addressing the media in New York, called on both India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further escalation.
Jammu and Kashmir remains a flashpoint between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, with both nations claiming the territory in full while administering separate parts of it.
