Close Call at Bokaro Steel Plant: Fire Breaks Out, Triggers Safety Probe

Bokaro: A major fire broke out at the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) on Monday evening, triggering panic among workers and causing significant property damage. Fortunately, no injuries or loss of life were reported, according to plant officials.

The incident occurred around 4:10 PM in the Hot Strip Mill (HSM), reportedly due to an oil leakage, though the exact cause remains under investigation. “We were working the second shift when the fire suddenly erupted,” an eyewitness said.

Firefighters battled the blaze for an extended period before bringing it under control. While no official figure has been released, sources estimate the damage could run into several crores. “The mill was shut down at the time of the incident. A probe team has been formed to ascertain the cause,” said another eyewitness.

Attempts to reach the Chief of Communications (CoC) M K Dhan, went unanswered. However, in statements to select media outlets, the CoC claimed no collateral or financial damage had occurred and that operations remain normal.

The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols at one of India’s leading steel production facilities, even as the situation is now reported to be fully under control.
