PM Modi Visits Ahmedabad Plane Crash Site, Meets Lone Survivor

Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the crash site of the tragic Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner accident in Ahmedabad, where 241 people lost their lives. The ill-fated flight, bound for London, crashed moments after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

The Prime Minister landed in Ahmedabad and proceeded directly to the crash site in the Meghaninagar area.

Expressing his grief on X (formerly Twitter), Modi wrote, “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected.”

According to police reports, the Air India flight AI171 was carrying 242 people — including 169 Indian citizens, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese passengers, and one Canadian. The aircraft crashed around 1:38 PM shortly after takeoff, striking a medical college hostel and claiming the lives of five students on the ground as well.

Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik confirmed that Ramesh, seated in 11A, was miraculously pulled out alive from the wreckage and is undergoing treatment. His survival has been termed “nothing short of a miracle.”

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, as recovery efforts and support for affected families are underway.

Later, he also visited the city’s civil hospital to meet the sole survivor of the incident, 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British-Indian national.
