Tabla Virtuoso Prangopal Bandopadhyay and Sitarist Supratik Sen Gupta Enthrall Students with Melodic Performance and Insightful Interaction
Bokaro: In a melodious confluence of rhythm and tradition, Delhi Public School (DPS), Chas, Bokaro hosted an enriching classical music session under the banner of SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth).
The event featured distinguished artists—tabla maestro Prangopal Bandopadhyay and sitar exponent Supratik Sen Gupta of the Banaras Gharana—who captivated students with their performance and profound insights into Indian classical music.
The session, aimed at promoting cultural values and holistic development, opened with an interactive talk where the artists elaborated on the essence of ragas, the seven notes of the sargam, and the spiritual depth of Indian classical traditions. The highlight was a soul-stirring sitar-tabla jugalbandi, which left the audience mesmerized and deepened the students’ appreciation for the country’s musical heritage.
SPIC MACAY, a non-political, nationwide movement, strives to integrate India’s cultural richness into mainstream education and inspire the youth with values rooted in heritage.
Prangopal Bandopadhyay, a noted young tabla player and the son of legendary tabla maestro Pandit Anandagopal Bandopadhyay, began his musical journey at the age of four. He is a B-High grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan; received numerous accolades, including the Pt. Nikhil Ghosh Memorial Promising Artist Award (2003), Akhil Bharatiya Pratibha Award (2020), and the Jadubhatta Award (2024).
Supratik Sen Gupta, an A-grade artist with All India Radio and national television, is widely respected for his command over Hindustani classical sitar and has represented Indian classical music at prominent platforms both in India and abroad.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Hemlata S. Mohan, Chief Mentor of DPS Chas, emphasized the school’s commitment to the motto “Service Before Self” and its vision of providing value-based, well-rounded education.
Dr. Manisha Tiwari, Director and Principal, highlighted the school’s continuous efforts to expose students to Indian art and culture. “This platform not only nurtures talent but also fosters meaningful interactions between students and stalwarts of Indian classical music,” she said.
