From Umling La to Mig La — BRO Pushes the Limits of Human Endurance
Ladakh: In a stunning display of grit and engineering excellence, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has once again inscribed its name in history — this time by constructing the world’s highest motorable road at a staggering altitude of 19,400 feet in Ladakh’s Mig La Pass.
With this, BRO has broken its own Guinness World Record, surpassing the 2021 achievement at Umling La Pass (19,024 ft). The extraordinary project was executed under Project Himank, known for creating and maintaining vital infrastructure in some of the world’s most challenging terrains.

Led by Brig Vishal Srivastava, the BRO team hoisted the National Tricolour and BRO flag at Mig La, marking the completion of the road amid freezing winds and oxygen-scarce conditions. The new route forms part of the Likaru–Mig La–Fukche alignment, establishing a third strategic axis towards Fukche village, close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Officials said the new road holds immense strategic and logistical value for India’s border infrastructure while also opening up fresh opportunities for high-altitude tourism in Ladakh. From the summit, the route offers breathtaking views of the Indus Valley, promising to attract adventure seekers and road enthusiasts from across the world.
Project Himank, often called the “lifeline of Ladakh,” has a long record of achieving the impossible — from building roads across Khardung La and Chang La to connecting some of the most remote Himalayan passes. The Mig La road, however, stands as a new pinnacle of human endurance and technical mastery.
This record-breaking feat once again reaffirms India’s engineering prowess and BRO’s unwavering commitment to strengthening connectivity in the nation’s toughest frontiers.
