ISRO’s Heaviest Satellite CMS-03 to Boost India’s Communication and Ocean Coverage
Sriharikota: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up for a landmark mission this weekend with the launch of CMS-03, the country’s heaviest-ever communication satellite, aboard the LVM3-M5 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on November 2.

Weighing around 4,400 kg, CMS-03 will be placed into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO), marking the fifth operational flight of India’s most powerful launcher, the LVM3. The rocket—previously used for Chandrayaan-3 and OneWeb missions—is designed to carry heavy payloads and is key to India’s emerging space ambitions.

Once operational, CMS-03 will significantly expand India’s telecommunication, broadband, and secure data transmission capabilities across the Indian mainland and surrounding oceanic regions. The satellite will strengthen national network resilience, improve disaster-management communications, and support both civilian and strategic needs.
ISRO said the CMS-03 mission represents “a vital step in enhancing India’s space-based communication infrastructure,” adding that the satellite will join the CMS series as the fifth operational member, broadening the country’s high-capacity coverage footprint.
The countdown operations are underway, with final checks on the LVM3 vehicle completed. The liftoff, expected in the early hours of November 2, will mark another milestone in India’s growing record of successful heavy-lift missions.
