BSL Develops High-Grade Electrical Steel for EVs and Generators, Boosts ‘Make in India’ Drive

  • BSL ’s Breakthrough in Advanced Electrical Steel Development

  • India’s First Indigenous Non-Grain Oriented Electrical Steel

Bokaro: In a major leap toward self-reliance, SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has successfully developed a special grade of non-grain oriented (NGO) electrical steel under IS:18316—an essential material for electric vehicles, large motors, and generators. This marks the first time such steel has been indigenously produced in India, with a successful trial batch of 1,100 tonnes already completed.

Until now, India depended heavily on imports for this high-grade steel—produced by only a few advanced nations. With this breakthrough, BSL has positioned itself as a key player in driving the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ missions forward.

How It’s Made:
The steel is crafted through an intricate process at BSL’s state-of-the-art facilities. Melted in SMS-2 with a precise chemical composition, the steel maintains low carbon for ductility and high silicon for superior magnetic properties. After hot rolling to 2.8 mm in the Hot Strip Mill, it’s further cold rolled in CRM-3 to a final 0.5 mm thickness—achieving exceptional precision, smooth finish, and stable magnetic performance.

Powering the Future:
This advanced electrical steel is used in components where magnetic fields change constantly—such as in motors, generators, and transformers. Its high efficiency makes it ideal for electric and hybrid vehicles, a rapidly growing global market. Recognizing this opportunity, BSL’s innovation aims to serve India’s emerging EV ecosystem and green energy sectors.

Customer Response: ‘Top-Class Quality and Performance’
Initial customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with the new steel receiving high praise for its consistency and performance. Industry partners say the product matches international standards, making BSL a trusted domestic supplier for the power, automotive, renewable energy, and agriculture sectors.

Driving India’s Industrial Growth:
This milestone underscores BSL’s technological excellence and its vital role in nation-building. By indigenously developing a material previously imported, the plant not only showcases its R&D strength but also strengthens India’s path toward industrial self-sufficiency and sustainable development.
