Bokaro DC Calls for Media to ‘Pause, Verify, and Regain Credibility’

National Press Day

Bokaro: Marking National Press Day, the Information and Public Relations Department, Bokaro, organised a seminar at Weston Farm, Naya More, Bokaro Steel City on the theme “Preserving the credibility of the press amid rising misinformation.” The event, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Ajay Nath Jha, brought together journalists from print and electronic media for a candid discussion on the challenges facing modern journalism.

The programme began with the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony by the DC, followed by a welcome address from District PRO Ravi Kumar, who stressed that the digital era has amplified the spread of misleading content. He said the only way for journalism to retain public trust is through rigorous verification, research-based reporting, neutrality and sensitivity.

In his keynote remarks, Deputy Commissioner Jha said the media has been the backbone of India’s democratic journey—from the freedom movement to the present day. However, he warned that the growing race for speed and sensationalism is eroding credibility. “Confusion arises when accuracy is sacrificed for breaking news. In a 24×7 news cycle, it is better to be right than first,” he said, urging journalists to pause, cross-check and prioritise truth over haste.

Calling for honest introspection within the media, he reminded that public faith in government and administration is intertwined with faith in the press. “The day trust breaks, years of credibility built by journalists collapses instantly,” he cautioned. He also stressed that disinformation—deliberately spreading falsehood—is far more dangerous than misinformation, especially in the age of AI where manipulated content poses a threat to national security.

The DC also announced that the foundation stone for the Bokaro Press Club will be laid soon, promising to develop a “grand and excellent” press club building. “Next year’s National Press Day should be celebrated in our own premises,” he added.
