Imran Khan, Wife Bushra Bibi Sentenced to 17 Years in Toshakhana-2 Case

Rawalpindi / Islamabad: Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) court on Saturday sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison each in the Toshakhana-2 corruption case, dealing another major blow to the jailed PTI leader.

The case relates to a luxury Bulgari jewellery set gifted to Khan by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during an official visit in May 2021. Prosecutors said the jewellery, worth nearly PKR 80 million, was bought by the couple for just PKR 2.9 million, allegedly violating state gift rules.

Verdict inside jail

According to Dawn, the verdict was delivered by Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand during a hearing held inside Adiala Jail, where Khan has been lodged since August 2023.

The court awarded Khan 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for criminal breach of trust and seven years under corruption laws. Bushra Bibi received the same 17-year sentence. The couple was also fined PKR 16.4 million, with the warning of extra jail time if the fine is not paid.

PTI calls trial “unfair”

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf strongly criticised the ruling, calling it a “closed-door jail trial” and alleging political targeting. The party claimed Khan’s family was stopped from entering the jail during the hearing.

PTI leaders confirmed that appeals will be filed in the high court, insisting the case is fabricated to block Khan from politics.

Already behind bars

Imran Khan is already serving a 14-year sentence in a separate ÂŁ190 million corruption case and faces more cases linked to the May 9, 2023 protests. Bushra Bibi is also serving a seven-year term in the same ÂŁ190 million case.

With multiple convictions stacking up, the Toshakhana-2 verdict further tightens the legal noose around Pakistan’s former prime minister—and keeps the country’s political crisis simmering.
