PM Modi Embarks on 3-Nation Visit: How Will It Reshape India's Indo-Pacific Strategy?

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday embarked on a six-day diplomatic tour of Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, aimed at strengthening India’s strategic partnerships, expanding economic cooperation, and reinforcing its vision for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

The three-nation visit, scheduled from July 6 to July 11, will focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation in defence, trade, technology, education, mobility, and people-to-people exchanges, while further advancing India’s Act East Policy and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions) Vision.

Indonesia Visit to Deepen Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Modi’s first stop is Indonesia, where he will stay from July 6 to 8 at the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The visit marks Modi’s first bilateral trip to the country since India and Indonesia elevated their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during his 2018 visit.

In his departure statement, Modi said the visit follows President Prabowo’s State Visit to India as the Chief Guest at the 2025 Republic Day celebrations and is expected to further deepen the multifaceted relationship between the two nations. He will also interact with the Indian diaspora and, alongside President Prabowo, visit the historic Prambanan Temple Compounds in Yogyakarta, highlighting the centuries-old civilisational and cultural links between India and Indonesia.

Australia Leg to Focus on Defence, Trade and Technology

From Indonesia, the Prime Minister will travel to Melbourne at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with key areas including defence and security, trade and investment, education, skilled mobility, emerging and critical technologies, sports cooperation, and stronger people-to-people ties. Modi is also scheduled to interact with members of the Indian diaspora, regarded as a key pillar of bilateral relations.

According to official sources, the visit will also include engagements with Australian business leaders as both countries seek to expand economic and strategic collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region.

Historic New Zealand Visit to Strengthen Economic Engagement

The final leg of the tour will take the Prime Minister to Auckland, where he will hold talks with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

The visit is expected to build upon the momentum created by Prime Minister Luxon’s visit to India in March 2025. Discussions will centre on expanding economic, trade and commercial cooperation, while further strengthening bilateral relations supported by the vibrant Indian diaspora.

The visit is also significant as it marks the first official visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in nearly four decades, underscoring New Delhi’s renewed focus on the Pacific region.

Reinforcing India’s Indo-Pacific Vision

In his departure statement, Prime Minister Modi said the three-nation visit reflects India’s growing engagement with key partners across the Eastern and Southern Indian Ocean and the Pacific.

“My visit to Indonesia and Australia in the Eastern and Southern Indian Ocean, respectively, followed by New Zealand, will further strengthen India’s Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision as well as our outlook towards a free and open Indo-Pacific,” he said.

The visit is widely seen as part of India’s broader diplomatic strategy to deepen strategic partnerships, diversify economic engagement, and enhance regional cooperation amid evolving geopolitical dynamics across the Indo-Pacific.
