New Delhi: In one of the biggest administrative shake-ups in the history of the National Testing Agency (NTA), the Centre has terminated the services of 47 officials as part of a sweeping overhaul aimed at restoring public confidence in the country’s examination system. Government sources said that criminal and legal proceedings are likely to be initiated against several of the dismissed officials over their alleged involvement in examination-related irregularities.
The action comes in the aftermath of the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy, which triggered nationwide outrage, student protests, judicial scrutiny, and a CBI investigation into the alleged leak and examination malpractice. The government has described the move as part of a broader effort to ensure transparency, accountability and integrity in high-stakes entrance examinations.

According to official sources, the restructuring goes beyond dismissals. The NTA is being rebuilt with a greater emphasis on professional expertise, including specialists in cybersecurity, digital forensics, assessment research, psychometrics, examination logistics, and test-centre management. The objective is to modernise the agency’s functioning and strengthen safeguards against future leaks and irregularities.
Sources indicated that investigators have identified serious lapses in examination management and possible misconduct by some officials. Those found to have played a role in the alleged malpractice may face criminal prosecution after the completion of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have also hinted that more disciplinary action could follow if additional evidence emerges.
The overhaul follows months of intense scrutiny after the cancellation of the original NEET-UG 2026 examination over allegations of a question paper leak. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested multiple accused and continues to investigate the nationwide conspiracy, while the Supreme Court has also taken note of the matter during hearings related to the examination irregularities.
The government’s latest action is being seen as an attempt to rebuild the credibility of India’s premier examination agency, which conducts major entrance tests including NEET, JEE Main, CUET and several other national-level examinations. Officials say the restructuring, combined with tighter legal provisions against paper leaks and enhanced technological safeguards, is intended to ensure that future examinations are conducted with greater security and fairness.
