New Delhi: Justice Sanjiv Khanna today took oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Khanna at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Justice Khanna succeeds Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who retired yesterday after serving as the CJI. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union ministers, and senior judges of the Supreme Court, among other dignitaries.
Justice Khanna’s appointment follows a recommendation by his predecessor, Justice Chandrachud, who stepped down at the age of 65. Justice Khanna will serve as the Chief Justice of India until May 13, 2025.
Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2019, Justice Khanna has been involved in several high-profile and politically sensitive cases. He was part of the bench that granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the controversial liquor policy case earlier this year. Additionally, Justice Khanna played a key role in constitutional benches that heard landmark cases, including the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the legal challenges surrounding electoral bonds.
