Washington: President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on Chinese goods in response to China’s retaliatory 34% tariff on U.S. products. This brings the total U.S. tariff on Chinese imports to a record 84%, while China’s overall tariff burden under Trump’s policies rises to 94%.
The escalation comes after China imposed additional tariffs on the U.S. following Trump’s earlier decision to implement sweeping tariffs globally, including 34% on China, 26% on India, and 20% on the European Union. Trump warned Chinese Premier Xi Jinping that unless China withdraws its new tariffs by April 8, 2025, the U.S. would proceed with the higher 50% tariff effective April 9.
Trump reiterated his stance on Twitter, accusing China of “illegal subsidization” and “currency manipulation,” and asserting that retaliatory tariffs would be met with stronger penalties. The announcement triggers broader concerns of a global trade conflict.
