Green Warriors in Uniform: DPS Bokaro’s 25-Year Crusade to Save the Planet

Bokaro: In a time when rapid industrialisation and technological advances often overshadow environmental concerns, Delhi Public School (DPS), Bokaro, stands out as a beacon of ecological responsibility. For over 25 years, the institution has actively promoted environmental stewardship through its flagship ‘Go Green Initiative,’ weaving sustainability into the core of its educational philosophy.

Set amid lush greenery, DPS Bokaro has created a model of green education, empowering students to become environmentally conscious citizens. From tree plantation drives to renewable energy adoption, the school’s efforts speak volumes about its commitment to a greener future.

Tribute to Leaders Through Trees

In an innovative move to blend patriotism with environmental care, the school has planted over 4,000 trees in the past 11 years, each named after national leaders and freedom fighters. This initiative instils both a love for nature and respect for India’s heritage among students.

Eco Club Drives Zero-Waste Vision

The school’s dynamic Eco Club, comprising both students and teachers, spearheads efforts to transform the campus into a zero-waste zone. Regular cleanliness drives and green audits foster a culture of accountability and environmental ownership.

Waste Paper to Wealth

An in-house paper recycling unit, running for over 15 years, converts used paper into handmade sheets used for academic and creative purposes. This sustainable practice not only reduces waste but also saves the institution nearly ₹50,000 every month.

Solar Powering Education

In line with government energy conservation guidelines, DPS Bokaro operates a 25 KVA solar power plant that supports the school’s academic block. This green power source eliminates the need for diesel generators and saves up to ₹4 lakh annually, significantly reducing the carbon footprint.

Learning Through Green Spaces

The school has established Charaka Vatika, a medicinal garden with over 100 herbal plants, offering students hands-on learning in traditional Ayurvedic practices. Alongside this, vermicomposting and organic farming initiatives expose students to eco-friendly agricultural techniques.

Water Conservation in Practice

With an effective rainwater harvesting system, the school collects and stores rainwater in underground tanks for gardening and groundwater recharge. This system ensures optimal water utilisation and educates students on conservation techniques.

Fostering a Love for Plants

The annual “Phulwari – Nurturing Nature” contest encourages students and parents to adopt and care for plants. These aesthetic and educational displays deepen the connection between families and the environment.

Eco-Friendly Hospitality

Upholding sustainability in every gesture, the school greets visitors with potted plants instead of cut flowers. Invitation cards embedded with fruit and vegetable seeds allow recipients to plant them, carrying the green message forward.

Leadership Speaks

Principal Dr. A.S. Gangwar underlined the importance of collective responsibility, saying,

“Safeguarding the environment is a shared responsibility. Education must go beyond classrooms and ignite a lifelong commitment to protect Mother Nature. A child who respects the Earth today will lead a greener tomorrow.”

With its decade-spanning commitment and hands-on approach to environmental education, DPS Bokaro continues to inspire a generation to think green, live green, and act green.
