India Gifts 40 Ambulances to Nepal to Boost Healthcare Access Across 33 Districts

Kathmandu/Birgunj/Pokhara/Dharan: In a significant boost to Nepal’s healthcare infrastructure, the Government of India has gifted 40 ambulances to health institutions across 33 districts in all seven provinces of Nepal. The ceremonial handover took place on Saturday across four locations — the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, the Consulate General in Birgunj, and the Pension Paying Offices in Pokhara and Dharan.

Of the 40 ambulances, 22 were distributed in Kathmandu, while Birgunj and Pokhara received seven each, and Dharan received four. The keys were formally handed over by Deputy Chief of Mission Prasanna Shrivastava in Kathmandu, with the presence of local mayors, municipal heads, political representatives, and social workers.

The Indian Embassy emphasized that this initiative falls under the longstanding India-Nepal Development Partnership and aims to strengthen Nepal’s healthcare delivery systems, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

Speaking at the event, Shrivastava highlighted that gifting ambulances has been a consistent effort by India for over three decades, with a total of 1,049 ambulances handed over since 1994. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude, noting the ambulances would significantly improve access to emergency medical care in remote regions.

India has also extended logistical support in other sectors — gifting over 300 school buses, 200 election and law enforcement vehicles in 2022, and 15 electric vehicles to Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in May 2025.

Reaffirming the robust India-Nepal development ties, the Embassy stated: “This gesture is a testament to the strong people-to-people connections and the Government of India’s unwavering commitment to Nepal’s development journey.”
