New Delhi: In a significant step to enhance onboard security, the Indian Railways has announced the installation of CCTV cameras in all passenger coaches and locomotives. The move aims to bolster safety, deter criminal activity, and modernize surveillance systems across the country’s vast railway network.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu recently reviewed the progress of the CCTV installation initiative. The cameras will be strategically placed in common movement areas near coach doors to maintain passenger privacy while ensuring maximum coverage.
The approved plan includes installing CCTV cameras in all 74,000 railway coaches and 15,000 locomotives. According to officials, each coach will be fitted with four dome-type cameras, and each locomotive will have six high-resolution cameras capable of capturing clear footage even at speeds exceeding 100 km/h and under low-light conditions.
Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of using top-tier surveillance equipment and instructed railway officials to ensure high-definition video quality. He also encouraged the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in analyzing the video data, potentially in collaboration with the IndiaAI mission, to help detect suspicious activity in real time.
The railway ministry stated that the CCTV footage would play a crucial role in identifying miscreants, enhancing law enforcement response, and improving overall passenger experience on board Indian trains. The initiative reflects Indian Railways’ broader focus on technology-driven safety enhancements.
