India Sends 10 Tonnes of Aid to Crisis-Hit Somalia in Gesture of Solidarity

New Delhi: In a strong show of support to Somalia, India has dispatched 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the African nation grappling with ongoing crises. The relief package includes essential medicines, surgical supplies, hospital equipment, and biomedical devices.

Sharing the development on X (formerly Twitter), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote: “A consignment comprising of 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance, which includes essential medicines, surgical items, hospital essentials and biomedical equipment has departed for Somalia.”

The move underscores India’s commitment to global humanitarian efforts, particularly in Africa, where it shares deep historical ties. According to the Indian Embassy in Kenya, Indo-Somali relations trace back centuries to maritime trade between the Indian subcontinent and the Horn of Africa.

Formal diplomatic ties were established in 1960, shortly after Somalia gained independence. A resident Indian mission was set up in Mogadishu but was shut down following the outbreak of civil war in 1991. Currently, India’s High Commission in Nairobi is accredited to Somalia.

In recent years, both nations have sought to reinvigorate ties through high-level visits and growing economic engagement, supported by the Indian business community’s presence in Somalia.

The humanitarian shipment reflects New Delhi’s ongoing commitment to Africa under its “India-Africa” partnership and signals continued cooperation despite geopolitical challenges.
