Aizawl/Imphal: In a landmark step toward strengthening infrastructure in India’s Northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Mizoram’s first-ever railway line, connecting the state more directly with the rest of India. The historic Bairabi-Sairang rail link, valued at ₹8,070 crore, was unveiled virtually as adverse weather prevented the Prime Minister from visiting Aizawl in person.

The 51.4-km railway line, starting from Bairabi near the Mizoram–Assam border and terminating at Sairang, about 20 km from Aizawl, boasts 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and the tallest bridge pier standing at 104 meters—higher than Delhi’s iconic Qutub Minar. The line includes key stations at Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang-Sihhmui, transforming Mizoram’s transport landscape by dramatically improving passenger and freight movement.

“For the first time, Sairang will connect directly to Delhi via the Rajdhani Express. This is not merely a railway project—it is a lifeline of transformation,” Modi said during his address from Mizoram’s airport. “This development will open new markets for farmers and businesses, enhance access to healthcare and education, and create employment opportunities across sectors.”

Alongside the railway launch, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation for several other critical projects in Mizoram worth over ₹9,000 crore, including the ₹500-crore Aizawl Bypass Road, a Khelo India indoor sports hall, and an LPG bottling plant at Mualkhang.

In a parallel development, PM Modi continued his historic visit to Manipur, marking his first since the 2023 ethnic unrest. He will meet displaced people affected by violent clashes between the Meitei majority and Kuki-Zo tribal communities, and inaugurate development projects worth ₹1,200 crore in Imphal, further strengthening the region’s stability and growth prospects.

This ambitious infrastructure push is poised to deepen integration of the Northeast into India’s economic mainstream, reducing travel times and fostering socio-economic upliftment for the people of Mizoram and Manipur alike.
