Rohini Acharya Quits Politics, Cuts Ties With Lalu Family After RJD’s Bihar Debacle

Patna: A day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) suffered one of its worst defeats in the Bihar Assembly polls, party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya has triggered fresh turmoil by announcing that she is quitting politics — and “disowning” her family.

The Singapore-based doctor, known for donating a kidney to her father and often seen as an emotional pillar of the Yadav household, made the dramatic declaration on Saturday through a post on X. Her announcement came just hours after the RJD’s tally collapsed from 75 seats to around 25, deepening the party’s crisis.

‘Quitting politics, disowning family’

In her post, Rohini said she was walking away not just from politics but from her own family — an unusually blunt rupture for a political dynasty long adept at managing internal rifts behind closed doors.

She also indicated that she had been pressured into the decision, naming Sanjay Yadav and Rameez, both close aides of Tejashwi Yadav, as the ones who “asked” her to take the step. Neither has reacted so far, fuelling speculation of a growing power struggle inside the RJD.

A family already on edge

The shock announcement comes in the shadow of Tej Pratap Yadav’s expulsion months earlier — a move that deeply upset Rohini, according to party insiders. Tej Pratap later floated his own party, the Janshakti Janta Dal, and contested the Mahua seat unsuccessfully.

Rohini had campaigned for Tejashwi during the recent election and publicly projected unity. Yet her frequent cryptic posts, unfollowing of key political figures, and hints of personal strain suggested deeper issues simmering beneath the surface.

RJD’s collapse adds fuel to internal fire

The RJD’s disastrous performance — winning only 25 of the 143 seats it contested — has sparked intense blame games within the party. With the NDA sweeping 202 seats, the Mahagathbandhan has been pushed to political irrelevance, leaving Tejashwi under mounting pressure.

Rohini’s exit, coming at this politically vulnerable moment, has further exposed the fractures within the Lalu Yadav household and the wider party organisation.

A deepening family divide

With Tej Pratap already estranged and Rohini now stepping away publicly, the once tightly-knit Yadav family finds itself in one of its most turbulent phases. The timing of Rohini’s break — immediately after the electoral rout — underscores how political and personal fault lines have now collided, leaving the RJD grappling with a crisis on multiple fronts.
