Patna: The Janata Dal (United) has expelled Mokama MLA Anant Kumar Singh and his wife, former MLA Neelam Devi, from the party for six years over alleged anti-party activities, intensifying an internal dispute within Bihar’s ruling party.
The action was taken by JD(U) Bihar president Umesh Singh Kushwaha, who cancelled the primary membership of both leaders with immediate effect. The party accused Anant Singh of defying its directives, making controversial remarks against senior leaders and campaigning against its official candidate in the Patna Graduates’ constituency election to the Bihar Legislative Council.
The immediate trigger was Anant Singh’s reported support for Anuj Singh, the candidate of Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party, against JD(U) leader and sitting MLC Neeraj Kumar. Despite the party leadership’s objections, Anant Singh reportedly participated in campaign activities supporting the rival candidate.

The confrontation exposed growing differences between Anant Singh and Neeraj Kumar. Efforts by senior JD(U) leaders to resolve the dispute reportedly failed, prompting the party to initiate disciplinary action.
The JD(U) has also sought action against Anant Singh’s membership of the Bihar Assembly, recommending that Speaker Prem Kumar initiate proceedings under the anti-defection provisions of the Constitution. However, expulsion from the party does not automatically disqualify a legislator from the Assembly; any such decision must follow the prescribed legal and constitutional process.
Anant Singh, a prominent and controversial political figure from Mokama, won the 2025 Bihar Assembly election from the constituency. His expulsion poses a political challenge for the JD(U), which has sought to enforce party discipline amid the growing confrontation.

The expulsion of Neelam Devi alongside her husband further signals the party leadership’s firm response to the dispute. The political fallout will depend partly on whether proceedings concerning Anant Singh’s Assembly membership are initiated and what decision follows.
The development marks a significant escalation in the JD(U)’s internal tensions, with potential implications for its political equations in Mokama and the wider Bihar political landscape.
