Protests Erupt in Delhi Outside Bangladesh High Commission Over Lynching of Hindu Man

New Delhi: Tensions flared outside the Bangladesh High Commission on Tuesday as members of Hindu organisations staged a protest over the brutal killing of a Hindu man in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district.

Demonstrators raised slogans against Bangladesh’s interim government and recited the Hanuman Chalisa, condemning what they described as targeted violence against minorities. The protest was sparked by the lynching of Deepu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker from Bhaluka Upazila in Mymensingh.

Members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad and other Hindu groups attempted to march towards the High Commission, prompting Delhi Police to step up security near the Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus Metro Station.

Police erected multiple layers of barricades along San Martin Marg and informed protesters that further movement would not be permitted. Despite this, demonstrators pushed past the first barricade before being stopped at a second security cordon.

According to police and media reports from Bangladesh, Das was beaten to death late Thursday night by a mob after being accused of making derogatory remarks about Islam. Eyewitness accounts said the attackers tied him to a tree and set him ablaze. Graphic videos of the incident later surfaced on social media, triggering widespread outrage.

Some reports further alleged that Das’s body was dragged onto a nearby road and burned again, underscoring the extreme brutality of the attack.

The lynching comes amid escalating unrest in Bangladesh following the killing of youth activist Sharif Osman Hadi, who reportedly died from gunshot wounds. His death has triggered nationwide protests, clashes between demonstrators and security forces in Dhaka and other cities, and attacks on media establishments.

Today’s protest in New Delhi reflected growing anger among Hindu groups in India over the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Bangladesh and renewed concerns over the safety of religious minorities across the border.
