982 Personnel Honoured with Gallantry and Service Medals; Jharkhand Officers Feature Prominently

New Delhi: On the occasion of Republic Day 2026, the Government of India has honoured 982 personnel from the Police, Fire Services, Home Guards, Civil Defence and Correctional Services with Gallantry and Service Medals for their courage, dedication and exemplary service to the nation.

Of the total, 125 personnel received the Medal for Gallantry for rare and conspicuous acts of bravery, including risking their lives to save others, protect property, prevent crime and arrest criminals.

In addition, 101 officers and personnel were conferred the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service for their outstanding and sustained service record, while 756 personnel received the Medal for Meritorious Service in recognition of their valuable contribution marked by devotion to duty and professional excellence.

Many of the awardees come from forces deployed in challenging regions affected by terrorism, insurgency and left-wing extremism, reflecting the demanding conditions under which India’s security and emergency services operate.

Jharkhand Officers Honoured

Alongside the national honours, the Union Home Ministry has also recognised 11 police officers and personnel from Jharkhand, including two IPS officers, for their distinguished and meritorious service. A formal notification in this regard has been issued by the state Home Department.

DSP Sanjay Kumar was honoured with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.

The Police Medal for Meritorious Service was awarded to the following officers and personnel:

  • IPS Patel Mayur Kanaiyalal
  • Head Constable Krishna Kshetri
  • Head Constable Arun Ojha
  • Head Constable Marcus Sanwar
  • Constable Jaydev Pradhan
  • Constable Janet Margaret Lakra
  • Constable Kumudini Kujur
  • Constable Sufal Oria
  • Constable Wasim Akhtar

The Republic Day honours once again underline the nation’s gratitude to its frontline personnel who serve with courage, integrity and unwavering commitment to public safety and national security.
