Lucknow: In a decisive push to tighten food safety norms, the Uttar Pradesh government has ordered that every egg sold across the state must carry a clearly stamped expiry date, starting April 1, 2026.
Clear Labelling, No Guesswork
The new rule requires egg producers and vendors to mark both the date of laying and the best-before date on each egg. The directive covers loose sales as well, bringing roadside vendors and local markets under the same compliance net.
28-Day Freshness Window
Officials have fixed a 28-day shelf life from the date of laying. Any egg sold beyond this period will be treated as unsafe and in violation of food safety regulations.
Why aren’t we talking about this?
UP BJP Govt has made it mandatory to put prodñ & expiry date on every egg that reaches market to safeguard public health.
It’s true! Food we eat can be medicine as well as poison!
Good initiative by UP-YOGI Govt.

Strict Enforcement on Cards
Authorities have signalled zero tolerance for violations:
-
Unmarked eggs may be seized or destroyed
-
Sellers could face action for distributing eggs unfit for consumption
District-level food safety teams have been tasked with ensuring on-ground enforcement once the rule kicks in.
Why This Matters
Until now, consumers had little way of knowing how fresh their eggs were—especially in open markets. The move aims to eliminate that ambiguity, curb the sale of stale eggs, and reduce potential health risks.
A Policy with Wider Impact
With this mandate, Uttar Pradesh positions itself at the forefront of transparent food labelling practices in India—setting a precedent that could prompt similar reforms in other states.
Bottom Line:
No more blind buys—come April, every egg in Uttar Pradesh will come with a timestamp of trust.
