Jamshedpur/Ranchi: A major security scare unfolded in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district after an unexploded US-made aerial bomb was recovered from the Subarnarekha riverbank in Baharagora, prompting swift action from the administration and security agencies.
Bomb Unearthed During Sand Mining
The explosive device, weighing nearly 500 pounds, was discovered during sand mining operations near the Panipara–Nagudsaai stretch. Workers spotted the suspicious, cylindrical object and immediately alerted local authorities, who rushed to the site and secured the area.
Identified as US-Origin Aerial Bomb
Initial inspection revealed markings such as “AN-M64 500 LB” and “American-made,” indicating that the object is a US-origin aerial bomb. Officials confirmed it as an unexploded ordnance (UXO), which remains highly volatile despite being buried for decades.
Area Cordoned Off, Bomb Squad Deployed
Following the discovery, police and district officials cordoned off the entire area, restricting public movement and advising residents to maintain a safe distance. A bomb disposal squad has been deployed, while assistance from specialised defence units is being sought to safely neutralise the explosive.
1955 Incident Raises Historical Link
Adding a historical dimension to the discovery, the officer in-charge informed that a similar bomb had been recovered from the same region back in 1955. Officials now suspect that the device could be linked to a past military aircraft crash in the Mahuldangri area. It is believed that the bomb may have fallen into the river during the incident and remained buried under layers of sand for decades.
Investigation On, Forensic Probe Likely
The exact origin and timeline, however, remain under investigation. Security agencies are treating the situation with utmost caution, given the potential risk involved. Officials said a forensic investigation will be carried out to determine the source of the bomb and establish its history.
