“Only One Power Centre”: Vijay’s Strong Message After Taking Oath as Tamil Nadu CM
Chennai: Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, marking a dramatic political shift in the state and ending nearly 60 years of alternating rule by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attended the swearing-in ceremony, underscoring the significance of the political transition and the alliance backing the new government.

“I Am a Common Man”: Vijay’s First Address
In his maiden speech as Chief Minister, Vijay projected himself as a grassroots leader with no political inheritance, saying the people accepted him because he did not belong to any “royal family” or political dynasty.
Promising transparent and accountable governance, the TVK chief said his administration would focus on delivering “real, secular and social justice” without misleading the public through unrealistic promises.
“I will not deceive people with false assurances,” Vijay declared, while urging citizens to give his government reasonable time to prove itself.
“Only One Power Centre”
In a strong political message aimed at both allies and critics, Vijay asserted that his government would function under a single authority.
“There will be no power centre other than me. I will be the only centre of power,” he said, signalling that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government would operate independently despite relying on alliance support to secure a majority.
The remark is being viewed as an attempt to reassure supporters that the new administration will not be controlled by coalition pressures.
Five Days of Negotiations to Form Government
The 51-year-old leader reached the majority mark after five days of intense negotiations and four rounds of meetings with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.
TVK emerged as the single largest force in the Assembly elections with 108 seats in the 234-member House, falling short of the halfway mark of 118.
Vijay eventually secured enough backing from alliance partners to stake claim to form the government.
Alliance Pushes TVK Past Majority
The TVK-led coalition received support from:
- Indian National Congress – 5 MLAs
- Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi – 2 MLAs
- Communist Party of India – 2 MLAs
- Communist Party of India (Marxist) – 2 MLAs
- Indian Union Muslim League – 2 MLAs
Since Vijay won from two constituencies and is expected to vacate one seat, the alliance strength currently stands at 120 MLAs.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Vijay and said the Centre would continue working with the Tamil Nadu government for the welfare and development of the people.
