Delhi Rolls Out 2-Day Work From Home, Weekly ‘No-Car Day’ to Save Fuel

New Delhi: In a major push to curb fuel consumption amid rising global energy concerns, the Delhi government on Thursday announced a series of measures including mandatory work-from-home days for employees, reduced official fuel usage, and a weekly “No-Car Day” campaign.

The move comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to adopt “wise spending” habits and cut unnecessary fuel consumption.

Government Staff to Work From Home Twice a Week

Under the new guidelines, Delhi government employees will work from home for two days every week as part of efforts to reduce commuting-related fuel use.

The administration has also directed that nearly half of all official meetings be conducted virtually to minimise travel requirements. Authorities said office timings for departments under the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be staggered to ease peak-hour traffic congestion across the capital.

Fuel Quotas Slashed, No New Vehicles for Six Months

As part of the conservation drive, the government has reduced the monthly petrol allocation for officers by 20 percent from the existing limit of 200 litres.

Officials also confirmed that no new government vehicles will be purchased over the next six months. The decision is aimed at cutting expenditure and promoting restrained fuel usage during a period of global energy uncertainty.

Weekly ‘Metro Day’ and ‘No-Car Day’ Planned

To encourage public transport usage, Delhi will introduce a weekly “Metro Day” alongside a “No-Car Day” initiative, urging residents to avoid using private vehicles at least once a week.

The government will also deploy 58 special buses across 29 government colonies to improve connectivity for employees and reduce dependence on personal transport.

A city-wide awareness campaign on fuel conservation and responsible consumption is also expected to be launched soon.

Modi Calls for Responsible Consumption

Prime Minister Modi recently made a series of public appeals asking citizens to reduce avoidable fuel use and adopt more sustainable spending practices.

His suggestions included using public transport, carpooling, work-from-home arrangements, postponing non-essential gold purchases, and avoiding extravagant foreign travel or destination weddings abroad.

Government sources clarified that the recommendations are not formal austerity measures or economic restrictions, but rather an appeal for economic responsibility amid volatile global conditions.

Global Energy Tensions Trigger Concerns

Officials said India remains heavily dependent on imports of crude oil, gold, edible oils and fertilisers, making the economy vulnerable to global supply disruptions.

The concerns have intensified due to ongoing tensions involving Iran and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global oil shipping route — which have pushed up fears over energy security and foreign exchange pressures.

Authorities stressed that the government is not discouraging spending altogether, but encouraging citizens to spend more prudently while global markets remain unstable.
