"Mosquitoes" & "Mafia" Eliminated from UP, Says Yogi Adityanath

Kushinagar, UP: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday made a striking political and administrative claim, declaring that both “mosquitoes and mafia” have been eliminated from the state. Addressing a public gathering in Kushinagar after inaugurating and laying the foundation stone for 278 development projects worth around ₹424 crore, the Chief Minister linked the decline of encephalitis cases in eastern Uttar Pradesh with his government’s campaign against organized crime.

“Encephalitis has ended here just like mafia has ended in Uttar Pradesh. We finished off mosquitoes as well as the mafia. Mosquitoes brought diseases, and the mafia brought unemployment. We cured both issues of diseases as well as unemployment,” Yogi said while addressing residents of the region.

The remarks came from Kushinagar, once considered one of the worst-affected districts in the encephalitis belt of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The Chief Minister claimed that sustained public health interventions, sanitation drives and healthcare improvements had helped bring the deadly disease under control, while strict law-enforcement measures had weakened criminal networks that previously dominated parts of the state.

Yogi also used the occasion to highlight what he described as Uttar Pradesh’s transformation since 2017. According to him, the state has moved away from an era marked by criminal syndicates, riots and lawlessness toward one focused on development, infrastructure and investment. Similar claims have been repeatedly made by the Chief Minister and senior BJP leaders, who argue that a zero-tolerance policy against crime has improved law and order and boosted investor confidence in the state.

During the event, Yogi praised local BJP representatives for accelerating development work in the Tamkuhi Raj region and said that government schemes were now reaching people more effectively than before. He contrasted the present administration’s focus on infrastructure and welfare projects with what he termed years of neglect under previous governments.

The Chief Minister’s “mosquitoes and mafia” remark quickly grabbed political attention because it encapsulated two major themes of his government’s narrative—public health improvements in eastern Uttar Pradesh and an aggressive campaign against organized crime. The phrase also echoes earlier statements by senior BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who had previously credited the Yogi government with eliminating both “mosquitoes and mafia” from the state.

While supporters view the statement as evidence of Uttar Pradesh’s transformation, opposition parties have often questioned the government’s claims on law and order and governance. Nevertheless, the Chief Minister remains firm in projecting the state as a model of development, safety and administrative efficiency.
