Param Pragya to Power Next-Gen Research; IIT Delhi’s Sonipat Campus Emerges as Advanced Computing Hub
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated ‘Param Pragya’, an advanced AI-powered high-performance supercomputing facility at the Sonipat campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, marking a significant push to strengthen India’s research capabilities in artificial intelligence, data science and advanced computing.
The inauguration took place alongside the 57th Convocation of IIT Delhi, where Modi was the chief guest. The new facility is expected to provide students and researchers with enhanced computational capabilities and support cutting-edge work in AI, data-intensive research and interdisciplinary scientific applications.
The launch underlines IIT Delhi’s expanding role in advanced technology and research, while also aligning with the broader national focus on building high-end computing infrastructure and strengthening indigenous research and innovation.

3,000-Plus Students Receive Degrees
At the convocation, IIT Delhi conferred degrees on more than 3,000 graduates, including 587 doctoral scholars, marking a major academic milestone for the institution. Outstanding students were recognised with prestigious honours, including the President’s Gold Medal, Director’s Gold Medal, Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal and Perfect Ten Gold Medals.
The ceremony brought together senior academic and institutional leaders, including IIT Delhi Board of Governors Chairperson Harish Salve and Director Professor Rangan Banerjee.
Addressing the graduating students, Modi emphasised the importance of applying knowledge, research and innovation to address national and global challenges. He urged the young graduates to look beyond academic achievements and use their expertise to contribute to India’s development.
Focus on Research and Innovation
The inauguration of Param Pragya adds another dimension to IIT Delhi’s research ecosystem, particularly at a time when artificial intelligence and high-performance computing are becoming increasingly important across science, industry, healthcare, engineering and public policy.
Union Minister Prahlad Joshi described IIT Delhi as an example of the transformation taking place in India’s education system. He highlighted the growing emphasis on a learner-centric and research-oriented ecosystem aimed at producing not just degree holders, but innovators, researchers and future technology leaders.
The developments at IIT Delhi reflect the wider effort to connect higher education with emerging technologies and national priorities.
