News Desk: In a powerful gesture of recognition for courage under extreme pressure, pharmaceutical major Mankind Pharma has announced financial assistance of ₹1 crore for Captain Smit Machchhar and his family, following the dramatic mid-air emergency aboard a Flydubai flight in which the Indian pilot was seriously injured.
The company said the contribution was made in recognition of Machchhar’s extraordinary courage, composure and sense of responsibility during the crisis.
In a message shared publicly by Mankind Pharma, the company said Captain Machchhar “put his crew and every passenger before himself”, describing this as an example of true leadership. The announcement was accompanied by a letter from Rajeev Juneja, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Mankind Pharma.
₹1 Crore ‘Gesture of Gratitude’
Juneja said that Mankind Pharma believes that actions should give substance to words of appreciation. The company therefore decided to contribute ₹1 crore to Captain Machchhar and his family as a tangible expression of its gratitude.
The letter praised the pilot for displaying courage and responsibility at a moment when fear and pressure were at their highest. Juneja also made clear that the monetary contribution could never equal the value of the lives protected during the emergency; rather, it was intended as an expression of respect, admiration and gratitude.

What Happened Aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073?
The recognition follows the extraordinary events of September 30, 2026, aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
According to reports, Captain Machchhar was allegedly attacked by his co-pilot inside the cockpit and sustained serious injuries. Despite being wounded, he remained involved in efforts to deal with the emergency. The aircraft, carrying 174 passengers and eight crew members, was eventually diverted and landed safely at Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia.
Reuters reported that Machchhar managed to activate the cockpit door release, allowing crew members and passengers to intervene, while two off-duty pilots among the passengers assisted with landing the aircraft safely.
From Mid-Air Crisis to a National Story of Courage
Machchhar’s actions have drawn widespread attention in India and abroad. The Federation of Indian Pilots has reportedly approached the Prime Minister’s Office seeking consideration for an appropriate national bravery award or civilian recognition for the pilot.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also spoken with Machchhar and praised his courage, according to reports.
Mankind Pharma’s announcement now adds a significant corporate gesture to the growing recognition of the pilot’s conduct during the emergency.
For Mankind Pharma, the ₹1 crore contribution is being presented not simply as a financial award, but as a symbolic salute to a pilot who, according to the company’s statement, placed the safety of his passengers and crew ahead of himself when the situation turned critical.
The message from Mankind Pharma is clear: courage in a moment of crisis deserves to be recognised—and remembered.
