Bishkek: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, with discussions covering the broad spectrum of India-Russia ties, including trade, investment, energy, defence, space and people-to-people cooperation.
The meeting was the first between the two leaders this year. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi and Putin reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation and welcomed the outcome of the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic and Cultural matters, held in Moscow on August 24.
Modi delivers strong message on Ukraine
A key focus of the meeting was the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Modi reiterated India’s consistent position that conflicts must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
“Every day of war sets humanity back,” Modi told Putin, stressing the need to work towards ending hostilities. He further said that the world must move “from endless wars to ending wars” and that India supports every effort aimed at peace.

The Prime Minister underlined that resolving issues through peaceful means was a “call of humanity”, reinforcing New Delhi’s longstanding diplomatic approach to the Ukraine conflict.
Trade, energy and defence remain central
Despite geopolitical tensions, India-Russia relations continue to rest on a broad strategic partnership. The two leaders reviewed cooperation in political, economic, defence, energy, space, mobility and people-to-people ties, according to the official Indian statement.
Trade and investment remain an important area of the relationship, while energy and defence continue to be major pillars of bilateral engagement. The talks also come amid efforts by both sides to expand economic cooperation and strengthen connectivity and other strategic sectors.
Putin expressed satisfaction over the continuing strengthening of India-Russia relations, describing them as being based on the principles of a “special and privileged partnership.”
Putin to visit India for BRICS Summit
The Bishkek meeting also set the stage for Putin’s forthcoming visit to India for the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13, 2026.
Modi said India was looking forward to welcoming Putin and his delegation, adding that the Russian President’s visit would further strengthen bilateral relations and deepen dialogue and cooperation within the BRICS framework. The PMO confirmed that Modi will welcome Putin for the summit in India.
India balances strategic ties with peace diplomacy
The Modi-Putin meeting comes at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, with the Ukraine conflict, instability in West Asia and disruptions to maritime trade affecting the international environment.
For New Delhi, the engagement reflects a two-track approach: maintaining its long-standing strategic partnership with Moscow while continuing to press for dialogue, diplomacy and a peaceful settlement of conflicts.
The latest meeting therefore carried significance beyond bilateral ties. While defence, energy and trade remain central to the India-Russia relationship, Modi’s message on Ukraine underlined India’s continuing push for peace and an end to prolonged warfare.
