Russia successfully launches Luna-25 to find water on Moon

RNS: Russia has successfully launched the Luna-25 Moon-Landing Spacecraft on an ambitious mission to investigate the enigmatic lunar South Pole. Luna-25 is planned to make a soft landing on the lunar South Pole, a region believed to hold coveted pockets of water ice.

The spacecraft was launched early Friday from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia’s Far East, propelled by a Soyuz-2.1b rocket equipped with a Fregat upper stage.

The momentous launch marked a pivotal moment for the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, as Luna-25 embarked on its journey to uncover the mysteries of the moon’s South Pole region.

Just nine minutes after liftoff, the Fregat upper stage, carrying the Luna-25 station, separated from the rocket’s third stage, setting the spacecraft on its intended trajectory.

Approximately an hour later, Luna-25 successfully separated from the Fregat upper stage, commencing its independent flight route toward the moon. This milestone marked the completion of the first stage of the spacecraft’s mission, as it now embarks on a journey spanning several weeks to reach the lunar surface.

This historic launch comes just four weeks after India launched its own lunar lander, Chandrayaan-3, with plans to reach the Moon’s South Pole on 23 August this year.

Despite the close proximity of the launch dates, Roscosmos has assured that there will be no collision or interference between the two missions, as they have been meticulously planned to land at distinct sites.

“They won’t clash,” assured Roscosmos in a statement to the media.

The agency emphasized that the vast expanse of the moon provides ample room for both missions to conduct their scientific investigations without any conflict.

The Luna-25 mission is significant for Russia and the global space community. The lunar South Pole is of great interest due to its potential reservoirs of water ice, a valuable resource that could transform the future of space exploration.
