BSL ink pact with UltraTech, ACC Cement for sustainable slag management

RNS: In a significant step towards sustainable industrial practices and resource utilization, Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has entered into a pioneering long-term agreement with M/s UltraTech Cement Ltd. and A.C.C. Cement Ltd. to sell and utilise blast furnace slag. The formal agreement signing ceremony took place at the office of the Executive Director (Operations) and is slated to be effective from August 1, 2023, to July 31, 2026.

BSL’s blast furnace, known for its robust production capacity, generates approximately 1.5 lakh metric tonnes of granulated slag on a monthly basis. This slag, a valuable byproduct, holds immense potential as a raw material for the cement industry. To address the crucial issue of proper waste slag disposal and sustainable usage, BSL has forged a long-term collaboration with UltraTech Cement and ACC Cement.

The triumvirate agreement envisions the supply of a substantial 1,296,000 metric tonnes of slag to the cement plants over the course of three years.

This strategic initiative is poised to deliver dual benefits. Firstly, cement industries are poised to enhance their production capabilities, capitalizing on the raw materials provided by BSL’s slag. Secondly, the endeavour aligns with the larger goal of curbing pollution and minimizing the carbon footprint, thus contributing positively to Bokaro Steel Plant’s sustainability endeavours.

The signing ceremony was graced by key executives from all participating entities. Representing BSL, Anil Kumar, Chief General Manager (Materials Management), inked the agreement. On behalf of UltraTech Cement, the agreement was signed by Amarendra Kumar, Head of Patliputra Cement Works, Patna, and Sanjay Lakhotia, DGM (Procurement), ACC Cement Ltd.

The MoU was formally handed over to the cement plants’ representatives by Birender Kumar Tiwari, Executive Director (Operations). The ceremony saw the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Suresh Rangani, Executive Director (Finance &  Accounts), Amitabh Srivastava, Executive Director (Materials Management), Rajan Prasad, Executive Director (Personnel & Administration), M P Singh, Chief General Manager (Blast Furnace), Harsh Nigam, Chief General Manager (Materials Management), and Anil Kumar, Chief General Manager (Materials Management).

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of Bokaro Steel Plant, UltraTech Cement, and ACC Cement to sustainable industrial practices, effective waste management, and the reduction of environmental impact.

As the three-year partnership takes shape, this initiative is anticipated to serve as a model for other industries seeking to forge similar synergies between environmental responsibility and industrial growth.
